Welcome to the July 2022 Round Up of the Fulbright REVIEW Blog
We may be in the midst of the “hog” days of summer here at the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, but there are still plenty of exciting happenings we can’t wait to share!
The July 2022 edition of the Fulbright REVIEW shines a spotlight on our outstanding instructors and researchers who continue to give their all, and some of our top student and alumni achievers, too.
I also have some leadership transition news to share with you – though it’s quite bittersweet for me. After careful and difficult consideration, I have accepted the position of Chancellor with Arkansas State University.
My last day with the University of Arkansas and Fulbright College will be Friday, Aug. 12.
Please know the college is in excellent hands with our Associate Deans continuing to guide the way forward, and our Fulbright College leadership team will be sure to let you know as soon as an interim dean is named.
In the in the meantime, I cannot thank you enough for allowing me to serve as your dean for the past nine years and for making Fulbright College my home for more than 27 years.
In other news, please meet this accomplished historian who won a 2022 SEC Faculty Achievement Award, and this beloved instructor and journalist who is retiring but not before being named Educator of the Year!
Additionally, this social work and African American studies researcher secured a prestigious grant to capture Black oral histories, and after 46 years of service to the U of A as a professor, researcher and leader, this renowned faculty member is retiring.
This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the official designation of the Buffalo National River so see how we’re celebrating, and see how this sesquicentennial film recently won big at an Arkansas festival!
Then, be sure to check out the musical way our Treble Chorus and Schola Cantorum students closed out the academic year and see how these researchers ultimately determined that land animals see more colors.
You can also help congratulate these faculty members on the recent publication of their books Race, Labor, and Violence in the Delta and Reporting for Arkansas, and these alumni for creating an endowed fund that will perpetually help upkeep and maintain our historic Old Main!
Afterward, meet four researchers who are improving archaeological data, maps and more in a precolonial African urbanism database, and KUAF’s two new team members who are expanding local reporting and underwriting revenue for the station.
Then, meet an honors psychology junior who was named a Morris K. and Stewart L. Udall Scholar, and six students and new alumni who received Graduate Research Fellowships from the National Science Foundation!
You can also cheer on seven students who were named finalists for 2022-23 Fulbright U.S. Student Program Awards, and another 250 U of A students – including dozens from Fulbright College – who won nationally competitive scholarships, fellowships, grants and internships!
Finally, if you’d like to learn more about the extraordinary people, initiatives, projects and activities that make up Fulbright College, please visit our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. Our handle is @uarkfulbright on all three.
And, as always, we’ll keep providing you with more new stories at fulbrightreview.uark.edu. We hope you’ll stay tuned.
