Welcome to the December 2019 Round Up of the Fulbright REVIEW Blog

by | Dec 16, 2019 | Announcements, Dean's Corner

With the year – and the decade – coming to a close, all of us here at the U of A’s J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences are wishing you and yours a Ful-BRIGHT holiday season filled with cheer!

As we move forward into the 2020s, it’s also such a wonderful time to reflect on all the amazing things you – our Fulbright Family – have accomplished.

This edition of the Fulbright REVIEW captures of few of those moments, including one with twin pole vaulting alumni who were the first in their family to complete college degrees, and may soon be heading to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Then, take a look back at the Department of Anthropology’s “audacious, tough and rebellious” founding leaders as well as what’s next for the department as it celebrates reaching its golden 50th anniversary!

Afterward, watch as this art education student heads to Texarkana, gaining valuable experience while sharing her passion for art with the next generation.

Be sure to celebrate with this alumna, who recently won a $25,000 award for her bilingual English and Spanish teaching techniques, and congratulate this associate dean who just won a 2020 Governor’s Arts Award!

Another round of congratulations goes out to these Geosciences researchers who received a National Science Foundation grant to study how rapidly changing landforms influenced the transition period from the Early to Late Cretaceous.

Then, check out this recap of our 11th One Book, One Community event, this student-produced feature on two Residence Halls that were recently dedicated and named to honor the first two African American professors at the U of A, and meet one of our musicologists who specializes in Viennese operetta – the ancestor of today’s Broadway musical!

You can also spend some time getting to know MyKala Wallace, Cindy Mao, Kingsley Pinder and Alex Marino – who thanks to four scholarships and the donors who created them – are each one step closer to making their education and career dreams come true

If these stories have inspired you to learn more, to make a year-end gift in support of one of these amazing projects, or to create your own, please contact Betsy Bushmiaer on our development team at 479-575-3712 or fulbright@uark.edu.

And as always, we’ll keep providing you with more new stories at fulbrightreview.uark.edu continuously, and showcase the most interesting features in our monthly email round ups so you never miss the inside scoop.

We hope you’ll stay tuned and continue to enjoy the blog. And, if you have a great story idea or know someone you’d like for us to feature, please email us at fulbcomm@uark.edu or submit your own post.

Sincerely,

Todd Shields, Dean of the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences
