Djamali Muhoza graduated in the spring of 2021 with a Doctor of Philosophy from the cell and molecular biology program and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He has recently accepted a tenure-track, faculty position as an assistant professor of biochemistry at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.

He will be joining various other U of A graduates in the Department of Math and Natural Sciences.

Djamali has been doing biochemistry research for over 10 years and has taught classes and labs at the U of A in the Chemistry Department. Under the guidance of his adviser, Paul D. Adams, Djamali studied interactions between cancer-causing proteins and drug candidates and has come up with various ways to improve the drugs and the interactions. His dissertation’s title was “Biochemical Characterization of Small Molecule Inhibitor Binding on a Ras Related GTPase and its Effector Interactions.”

Djamali is originally from eastern Rwanda and finished his undergraduate at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. He has also worked at the University of Arkansas for Medical Science as a research technician. In his new position, he plans to empower students to succeed in and out of the classroom and pursue their desired careers. He is also going to start a research lab to continue his work on cancer proteins and introduce UAMS students to scientific research techniques. He is looking forward to collaborating with faculty and students at the U of A.
