Music Professor Selected as Part of Changemakers to Take Part in Global Leaders Program
Out of hundreds of highly accomplished candidates from around the world, Lia Uribe, associate chair and associate professor in the Department of Music, has been selected as one of 60 collaborative arts leaders and changemakers to be part of the 2022 Global Leaders Program.
Lasting from August 2021 through August 2022, the Global Leaders Program is an intensive executive development training in social innovation through the arts curated by nine internationally recognized universities and think tanks including Harvard, McGill, Duke, and Georgetown Universities, among other world-class institutions. Its curriculum is focused on building and cultivating skills in arts leadership, community innovation, creative design, organizational management, and social entrepreneurship.
This year, the cohort comprises 28 nations, spanning six continents, and includes project founders, social entrepreneurs, teaching artists, concert presenters, professional orchestra musicians, university & conservatory professors, and doctoral researchers. 2022 Cohort Members represent Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Eswatini, the European Union, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Historic Palestine & The Levant, Honduras, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria, Portugal, Romania, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, the United States, & Venezuela
“It’s a great honor to be part of the Global Leaders Program. I am excited to have the opportunity to connect with and learn from musicians and citizen-artists that are passionate about the power of music to affect societies and to rebalance structures. I am eager to receive the theoretical frame, support and skills that will match my years of experience working with communities as an artist, educator, cultural bearer, arts administrator, and advocate,” says Lia Uribe. “This opportunity is also a perfect match to the work that I have been moving forward with my teammates, colleageus and friends through RefleXions Music Series and I can’t wait to see the impact that one will have over the other.”
RefleXions Music Series, Uribe’s most recent project, is conceived as a celebration of music, musicians, advocates, and audiences, as a series of events that foster creative justice and diversity through opportunities to reflect, learn, grow, change, and teach. RefleXions is funded by the University of Arkansas Chancellor’s Grant for the Humanities and Performing Arts Initiative and sponsored by the J. William Fulbright College of Arts & Sciences, the Department of Music, The Honors College, the Women Giving Circle, and KUAF 91.3.
Uribe joins University of Arkansas Department of Music graduates Catalina Barraza and Gustavo Samudio, who were part of the Global Leaders Program in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
