Daniel Levine, director of the Classical Studies Program and professor in the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas, recently received the 2024 Aristeia Award for Distinguished Alumni/ae from the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA).

The award honors living alumni/ae of the ASCSA who have provided exceptional service to the school and contributed in an extraordinary way to the school’s mission in teaching, research, archaeological exploration and publication.

“The opportunity to work closely with scholars from all over the world at the school has resulted in lifelong friendships and collaborations which I dearly cherish,” Levine said. “I am grateful to Fulbright College for being a contributing institution to the American School of Classical Studies and for supporting my research in Athens as a senior associate member at the school.”

As an undergraduate student, Levine was a member of the school’s 1974 summer session. Including the five summer programs he led for the ASCSA (in 1987, 1995, 2006, 2018, and 2022), he has participated in six of the school’s summer programs.

Levine also served on a wide array of committees at ASCSA, was elected to a three-year term as president of the Alumni/ae Association and helped secure donations to support the school’s excavations in the Athenian Agora and at Corinth.

“My association with the American School of Classical Studies at Athens over the last 50 years has helped me immeasurably in scholarship, service and teaching,” Levine said. “I like to think that I have passed on to my students and others the many gifts that the school has given to me.”

As a professor of classical studies at the U of A since 1980, Levine has taught courses in ancient Greek, Latin, and classical studies, as well as served 11 years on the teaching team for the Fulbright College Honors Humanities Project.

He has won several local and national awards for service and teaching excellence, published more than 50 articles, book chapters, and reviews, and presented more than 60 scholarly papers. Levine has led 17 study tours in Greece: 11 times for the U of A, once for the Virgilian Society, and five times as summer session director for ASCSA.

Levine holds a B.A. in Greek and Latin from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. in Classics from the University of Cincinnati.
