In his own words:
I am honored to be selected as the 2019 recipient of the Francis Greer & Herman Harrison Hankins Endowed Scholarship. It is because of your generosity that I will be able to reduce my hours at work and focus more on school.
I am currently a junior pursuing a major in biology. My plan is to attend medical school and pursue a career in trauma surgery.
Since my freshman year, I have worked a full-time job in order to pay for my school. Being a full-time worker and a full-time student put a lot of strain on me. The little time I had was put towards studying and homework.
Being awarded this scholarship allows me to finally switch to a part-time job and focus more on school, as well as engage in extracurriculars and better prepare for medical school.
I plan to volunteer in my community and hopefully shadow doctors at local clinics. This scholarship has also given me the opportunity to be an example to my family as a first-generation college student.
Thank you for being a donor to the school. Your generosity will help me and many future students achieve their goals.
Sincerely,
Carlos Alvarado
