Students walking through the gate on Maple StreetThe Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences welcomes all new and returning students!

“This year is going to be an excellent one because of the hard work of our students and the dedication of our faculty and staff,” said Kathryn Sloan, interim dean of Fulbright College.

“The students at Fulbright College are integral members of the campus community,” Sloan added. “When beginning their fall semester on The Hill, it’s important students remember the greatness they are capable of both this semester and beyond.”

With three schools, 16 academic departments, three schools, and more than 40 academic centers, Fulbright College offers a multitude of degrees in the fine arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences to satisfy nearly any academic interest.

To ensure all students feel capable of success, Sloan asked the college’s career initiatives team to share their five top tips for student success.

These tips, along with plenty of other helpful information, can also be found in the Career Connections Website.

To set yourself up for future success:

Explore your path.

What are your skills or interests? How might they help you connect with those on campus or in the larger community? What hobbies or pastimes could become part of a future career or academic interest? Interest or skills assessments can also be helpful in determining viable options for the future.

Discover your resources.

Now that you’ve made it to campus, it’s important to remember there are plenty of resources here to help you navigate your degree and help you determine what career is right for you. Your professors and advisors are always here to help, as well as the Fulbright College Career Connections team. The Cordia Harrington Center for Excellence (CORD) is another great resource for advising, tutoring, and career resources.

Tell your story.

After arriving at college, students often feel pressure to fit in. Your peers, professors, and potential employers, though, will value your individuality! Make sure you illustrate your college story by maintaining an updated resume, LinkedIn, and digital portfolio. Include your skills, interests, plans, and what makes you, you! Classes like “ARSC 3203: Professional ePortfolio” can also be helpful in making sure you’re reflecting your best self.

Grow your experience.

Finding the right Registered Student Organization, internship, volunteer position, or academic opportunity for you can be overwhelming. Don’t be afraid to try new things and ask about experiences that you think would suit your interests. Handshake, LinkedIn, and the PACE Micro-Certificate can also help you to learn, navigate, and discover career-building opportunities.

Prepare your next move.

What do you want to “do with” your major? What does your life look like after college? These are questions you probably hear all the time. Being prepared means being able to answer these questions confidently. College and career counselors can be valuable resources to help you explore internships, jobs, and graduate programs.
