Doctoral Student Selected for NIH Summer Training Course

Ugochi Isu, a doctoral student in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing a place in the prestigious 2023 Clinical and Translational Research Summer Course organized by the National Institutes of Health.

The NIH Summer Clinical and Translational Research course offers a wide range of learning opportunities. It is designed for exceptional Ph.D. students who want to explore the connections between scientific knowledge and real-world clinical practices. The course brings together talented individuals in the field and encourages teamwork, creativity and the pursuit of groundbreaking research.

Thirty students were accepted into the program this year, which will be held from July 17-21. Throughout the course, Isu will be privileged to engage with leading experts, participate in dynamic discussions, deliver presentations and actively participate in interactive sessions. These invaluable opportunities will expand her knowledge, enhance her understanding of ethical research practices and facilitate the expansion of her professional network within the NIH community.

Under the guidance of associate professor Mahmoud Moradi, Isu has demonstrated exceptional dedication and expertise in her research endeavors. Her work primarily focuses on exploring the intricate dynamics of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) and unraveling the fascinating interplay between proteins and lipids. Her current research aims to shed light on the differential dynamics exhibited by these vital biomolecules, providing novel insights into their functional mechanisms and potential implications for future therapeutic advancements. Notably, Isu has made invaluable contributions to the field by co-authoring a groundbreaking study on the distinct dynamic behaviors exhibited by the spike proteins of SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2. These significant findings were published in the renowned Journal of Biological Chemistry in 2022, further advancing our understanding of these viruses and revealing potential therapeutic pathways.

Isu’s acceptance into the 2023 Clinical and Translational Research Summer Course marks a significant milestone in her academic journey.
