Gary Jackson

Sophomore Double Majoring in Biology and Chemistry with Honors

In this conversation, Jackson talks about his fascination with and love of holistic health, wellness and all things science; his favorite Honors Chemistry and Philosophy classes and professors; the importance of tailoring your college experience; his work as Director of Physical Health and Wellness in the Associated Student Government and his Find-Your-Impact Coordinator position in the Volunteer Action Center; and his goal of going to medical school to pursue his dream of being an orthopedic surgeon with an emphasis on missions work in Latin America.

Q: Tell us a little about your academic passions, research and/or what you’re studying within the college. What excites you about this?

I’ve always enjoyed holistic health, wellness, and all things science.

I also enjoy classes that, regardless of the content being presented, make you truly think about the information you’re presented with in formulating your own opinion and thoughts.

I have enjoyed how much I have been able to find classes that fit this and enjoy how they prepare me for future education and learning.

Q: How long have you been at Fulbright College? What have you enjoyed most about your time here?

I have been at the Fulbright College for the last two years now.

Being a part of the amazing community of students, staff, and faculty that embraces each student and encourages them to pursue their dreams has really helped shape my college experience!

Q: What has your favorite class been so far and why?

I’ve had a few favorite classes I would like to mention: Honors Chemistry 2 with Dr. Hershberger, Honors Organic Chemistry 1 with Dr. Zheng, and Honors Introduction to Philosophy with Dr. Ward.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the content presented in each of these classes, the thing that made each respective class so special was the passion for education that could be seen in each professor.

Whether it be engaging students in unique ways, intellectually challenging their classrooms each and every day, or taking the time to meet with students individually, these professors truly pushed students to succeed, and I am extremely grateful to have taken their classes!

Q: What advice would you give to new students about to join the college?

College can be scary, and that’s okay!

I was at first intimidated by the grandness of college and how “larger than life” it seems; there’s so much you can do, and that can be overwhelming at times.

However, once I pushed past this and realized how much everyone wants to see and help you succeed, I was able to help tailor my college experience to my own personal identity.

Q: What do you like to do during your time outside of the university?

I enjoy being a part of campus extracurriculars through my Director of Physical Health and Wellness position in the Associated Student Government or my Find-Your-Impact Coordinator position in the Volunteer Action Center.

These positions allow to me to promote and advocate for the physical health and well-being of students on campus and help students become connected to service opportunities both on campus and in Northwest Arkansas!

Outside of this, I enjoy working out, exploring nature with my friends, or cheering on whatever Razorbacks sport is in season!

Q: When do you anticipate graduating, and what’s up next on the horizon for you?

I anticipate graduating in the Spring of 2024; I then plan to go to medical school and pursue my dream of being an orthopedic surgeon with an emphasis on missions work in Latin America.
