Dell Technologies Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs and COMM BA alumna (’93), Jennifer “JJ” Davis, returned to Kimpel Hall in September to speak with students about her work in corporate communication and offer early career advice. On Monday, September 16, Davis participated in a discussion facilitated by Laurie Brady, COMM internship director, and attended by a group of graduate and undergraduate students interested in corporate and political communication. On Tuesday, September 17, she was a guest lecturer in Scott Branton’s Organizational Communication class, where she spoke about corporate culture and navigating social issues.

Davis, whose portfolio at Dell includes overseeing all aspects of global communication and their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) perspective, encouraged students to see communication as a strategic process necessary to advocate for organizations and the multiple publics they serve. “We [communication practitioners] are more than just writing news releases and putting on events,” Davis said. “If you don’t think communication has a strategic seat at the table, think again.”

As part of this discussion, Davis explained part of her role is to “marry people, profit, and purpose” as well as “protect a company’s reputation while elevating its corporate character.” She provided students with several case studies, from the use of generative AI in public communication efforts to organizational responses regarding the war in Ukraine.

Davis also provided students with early career advice. Davis, who began her career working as a correspondence secretary in the Arkansas Governor’s Office, encouraged students to “take advantage of what’s right in our backyard…Your 20’s should be spent getting as much experience as you can, because that’s how you build skills.” She also spoke about the importance of seeking and working with mentors and creating a personal development plan.

Caroline Collins, senior communication major, said, “Talking with JJ Davis about her career and advice was an incredible experience. I’m taking away key lessons for my career, like the importance of working to live, embracing flexibility, and finding a mentor to guide personal and professional growth. I’m grateful to the Department of Communication for organizing this event and ensuring that we are prepared for our future careers.”

Matthew Spialek, department chair, said, “We were thrilled to welcome JJ back to Kimpel Hall this month. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to engage with one of our successful alumni and to connect concepts they are studying in the classroom to their future careers. We look forward to working with her and many more alumni in the future.”

Alumni, who are interested in returning to campus to speak to classes, may contact the Department at commalum@uark.edu or by clicking on the “Visit” button at the end of The CommUnity Call newsletter.
