‘Those Aren’t Words You Hear Every Day’; Burrow Discusses Touring with ‘Hamilton’

This month’s Short Talks from the Hill features Jason Burrow, associate professor of musical theater at the university.

Burrow is a pianist, singer, music director and voice teacher. He has performed as a pianist and vocalist in venues such as Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall. He sang backup for Sting at Radio City Music Hall at the 68th annual Tony Awards on CBS and sang as a member of the Broadway Inspirational Voices with Mariah Carey at the Beacon Theatre in New York City during her 2014 Christmas concerts.

Burrow is currently on sabbatical, touring with Hamilton and serving as associate music director. In the podcast, Jennifer Holland asked him how the tour has enhanced his work on campus.

“I think last night’s show was my 104th show of Hamilton — because I’m keeping track,” Burrow said. “And I will play something around 400 shows or before I come back. So, just the knowledge of how to maintain that. Getting to meet the people in the business who are at the top of their field, getting — for me — to give feedback to my students and say, this is legit, this is how this goes. This is an example of what you have to be able to do or, just real-world application of what we’re teaching.”
