U of A Celebrates National Native American Heritage Month

The University of Arkansas community will join Indigenous faculty, staff, alumni, and students in honoring the culture, history, and triumphs of Indigenous peoples of the past and present all November long in honor of National Native American Heritage Month.

Highlights of the U of A’s Native American Heritage Month festivities include a musical performance at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 4 in the Multicultural Classroom, and then at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7 the Cherokee Culture Series features Sammy Sill presenting “Traditional Stone Marbles” in the same location.

Additionally, at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, the Anne Kittrell Gallery on the fourth floor of the Arkansas Union will host a book reading, talk and signing with Cherokee author and doctoral English student Andrea L. Rogers.

Rogers will share her latest book, Manmade Monsters, and afterward the gallery will debut a new Indigenous Art Exhibit.

The Cherokee Culture Series continues at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14 with Richard Fields giving a bow-making demonstration.

The month’s celebration comes to a close Wednesday, Nov. 30 with a Reservation Debutante performance followed by a Kiowa Ledger Art Conversation with artists Jay Benham. This event will last from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Arkansas Union’s Union Theatre.
